Acoustic joist tape is a soundproof material that is typically used to cover up spaces in ceilings or floors that are below or above living or other noise-sensitive areas. It’s a simple solution for those who have plenty of extra time and want to save money by doing it themselves!
Step process of installing acoustic joist tape
- Measure your ceiling to establish how much acoustic joist tape you will need.
This is usually done by placing a long strip of tape on the ceiling, right below the surface of the room. The tape should extend your entire length of your ceiling. If there are any long gaps in the strips, then you will simply use more tape to fill up those gaps. This can also be done if you want to prevent any gaps from forming between your ceiling and walls.
- Apply a few small dabs of glue onto several pieces of acoustic joist tape which you have already prepared and stuck together at one end to form one long line. Place each small piece of joist tape along a row in between two rooms, or even between two exactly opposite room spaces, such as left and right walls respectively.
- Roll up the tape and simply place it near the ceiling, leaving a gap at both ends. Then slowly drop down to cover your ceiling up until you reach your floor or nearby wall. When you are done with that, slowly roll up the loose end of the extra tape and place it back onto itself at one end, ready for the next step. Repeat that process until your ceiling is covered in soundproof sound absorbing acoustic joist tape. Use a generous amount of adhesive on each piece of tape so that it sticks to itself well.
- Once you have finished covering up your ceiling, simply cut off the excess of acoustic joist tape. Clean up any excess adhesive from the last step with a sponge or a dry cloth. For any leftover pieces, simply fold them and place them into your waste bin instead of using them to cover walls or other spaces in your room.
Benefits of acoustic joist tape
- Many people who have tried using acoustic joist tape say that it has done an excellent job of covering up spaces and gaps in their ceilings. It can eliminate the echoes that occur when sound is reflected off the walls and ceilings around your room.
- Using acoustic joist tape will save you a lot of money, as it is far cheaper than buying professional soundproofing materials from a music or recording store. Suppliers who sell acoustic joist tape also include instructions on their product packaging, which will tell you how much to use in order to achieve the maximum noise reduction effect.
- You don’t have to worry about the tacks sticking out from your ceiling. Most acoustic joist tapes are made of polyurethane foam and are extremely durable. Therefore, they will not damage your ceiling and will not fall off or deteriorate quickly like tiles might in the long run.
- This method will work for those who are renting their home, because you don’t need to ask permission from your landlord to install the acoustic joist tape. This is great for colleges where students may have a hard time gaining access to every room and every corner in their rental spaces.
